Sunday 4th November

Up and away early as we had a big drive ahead.  Stopped along road to Dolores Hidalgo, then onwards onto MEX57.  Stopped again to look at the mind-boggling display of yuccas to be seen along that road side that never fail to amaze me.

Text Box: There were also a vast array of cacti within 2m of wherever you stood

Around 30km short of Saltillo we stopped again for another wander in the undergrowth.  Saw some nicely presented Agave gentryi, Yucca carnerosana, a Dasylirion which may or may not be D. miquihuanensis and, of most interest to me, a trunkless clumping Nolina species.

We then pushed on to Saltillo and easily located our hotel just out of town.  Rancho El Morillo – a wonderful 300 yr old hacienda converted back in the ‘30s to a hotel and run since then by the same family.

Norma, our hostess, was friendly, charming, incredibly helpful and spoke fluent English – arranging us a taxi into town for dinner and a look around.  Dinner was nice but Saltillo sadly wasn’t very appealing so we adjourned back to the hotel for a tequiila on the veranda before turning in early after a long, dusty drive of nearly 700km.
